The first car that we bought was a 1960 bug. Price $1,462 and we had to wait 3 months. Only colors coming to the US were Red or Black and you didn’t have a choice. We got black and had it until 1970 when we got a 1971 which our son now has. My first car was a 1959 Volkswagen bug. No seatbelts, no key to the engine which is in the back. My stepfather paid $200 bucks for it and gave it to me because I was 18 and had just given birth to my Son, a product of date rape and was kicking me out. I moved into a a tiny apartment with my baby, our clothes, and NOTHING else. I was 18 and never took driving lessons so I did my best.
Took me two months to figure out that first through five gears plus neutral were normal but to go in reverse, you had to push the gear shift down to a lower level. For months, I had to park in spaces where Bothell front and back were empty so I could pull in through both, facing toward the lane between spaces so I could pull forward and leave. Volkswagen Painting Bugs and Things poster is so nice. I paid $200 for a midnight blue paint job from Earl Scheib auto paint company. This was one of the first comedy bits of yours I saw (many years ago)… loved it, because my first car was ALSO a VW bug! “Only car where you could get frostbite and 2nd-degree burns at the same time.”
