I will love to hear your interpretation of the various lines in this poem. I wrote it for one of my professor after I was saved and I returned to complete my education. My mother died from dementia. I have written this poem that addresses bearing witness to slow, terminal diseases such as Alzheimer’s and how hard it is to see your loved one vanish painfully before your eyes, knowing they would never choose this for themselves. The end of the poem raises the question: How far does love and benevolence go? What would God want and how would He judge? These are difficult questions that we must struggle with as a society, culture, and world. What is really right or wrong or merciful? I leave that up to you to answer. What would you want if it were you experiencing the long goodbye?
