“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” I’ve always been drawn to this verse, and I believe it’s because of it’s depth and it’s versatility. I think you could pick five Christians at random and ask them individually about their thoughts in this verse, and you would get five different answers, and all possibly being true and relevant! Like Sunflower Love Fishing shirt. But to me, if I were one of those five random Christians, this post would be my response to the question.

When I think of salt, especially in the context of ancient Israel, I think of preservation and seasoning, or flavor. When Jesus says we are the salt of the earth, I believe He thought in this way too, being how He always taught the people using ideas they were familiar with: fishing, farming, feasts, and in this case, seasonings. In the time of Adam and Eve in the garden, they lived in unison with God’s plan and purpose for their lives. They, like Jesus said, gave this earth, this world, purpose. They preserved it, gave it flavor, or meaning. But when Adam fell, we lost that purpose, resulting in a loss of flavor. We no longer stuck out and began to blend in with the world and become bland.
If not for Jesus, we’d still be wondering around the world searching for peace and happiness from something we were created from, dirt. In order to not just seek but find that peace that surpasses anything we know of, we have to look to Someone who we don’t see and don’t fully understand. Yes, we were created from dirt, but that dirt became more when the breath of God entered into it. We became a soul with a spirit and a purpose. To glorify God throughout all creation and witnessing of His love. Got Sunflower Love Fishing shirt now!
Spreading our saltiness throughout the whole world to preserve it for eternity, to give it flavor, and this only comes when you accept what he’s did for you, and tell someone else, so that they too can experience the same love, the same peace, and the same meaning. God bless you guys.Something we’re still guilty of if we don’t constantly renew our faith and trust in God. Jesus asks a very good question, once salt has lost it’s flavor, how do you make it salty again? If you’re preparing a meal, you’d never add a seasoning that adds no spice or taste to the dish, right?
If you had a seasoning like this in your cabinet, and discovered it’s blandness, you’d discard it. What makes us think we are so great, that God wouldn’t do the same, if we refuse to follow Him? Unfortunately we were cursed with a sinful nature, leading to a nature of doubt, stress, unbelief, and sin. Flavorless. But I believe Jesus came and died on the cross to make us salty again! Ever heard it put that way? Kinda odd I know, but true! He restored the relationship Adam had with God from the start, He commissioned us and gave us our flavor back, our meaning and purpose.
