Hope you love Nasa Apollo 11 50th Anniversary shirt. Oct. 11, 1968 will mark the 50th anniversary of 3 American astronauts who launched into Earth’s orbit aboard Apollo 7. It was the first piloted mission of the spacecraft designed to meet President Kennedy’s challenge to land on the lunar surface. Best memories of childhood. Greatest thing Humanity ever accomplished. I thought the Navy & NASA wanted to use the USS John F. Kennedy as the prime recovery ship (for obvious reasons) but then President Nixon squashed that and the Navy had to pick another ship.

In 1969, it was chosen by the U.S. Navy as the Prime Recovery Ship for the Apollo program. That year, it recovered the Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins on July 24th. They arrived at shore flying the banner “HORNET PLUS THREE”! This image of the prime recovery vessel was taken in November 1969 as it moved towards the Apollo 12 Command Module (Yankee Clipper) to retrieve the spacecraft. A helicopter from the recovery ship, which took part in the recovery operations, hovers over the scene of the splashdown. This year, we start our celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the first Apollo missions to the Moon.

That remarkable mission proved that we could send humans to the Moon and back, a feat which would culminate in the Apollo 11 Moon landing just 7 months later. A portion of tonight’s program will make note of the National Cathedral’s Space Window, an intricate stained glass window that commemorates the Moon landing. Embedded in the artwork, designed by Rodney Winfield of St. Louis, Missouri, is a piece of Moon rock from that mission. These documents show the correspondence between former NASA Administrator Thomas Paine and President Nixon, who authorized the Moon rock as a gift. The Space Window was officially dedicated on July 21, 1974, the 5th anniversary of the Moon landing.
