“Angels Don’t Always Have Wings, Sometimes They Have Whiskers”. As 2018 came to a close, we were reminded again that our Bay Cats aren’t getting any younger and we must cherish the time we have with them. You all shared our joy when four of our Bay Cats moved to the barn at St. Francis Riding Club, and it quickly became known as “Project Barn Cat”. Tommy (The Sea Captain), Bashful, DimSum, and Forrest have been living the life they always deserved since moving to Oni’s barn in the Spring of 2017– soft carpeting, a plush couch, heated beds, cat trees and all the food they could eat whenever they wanted.

Although some took longer than others to settle in, we think you’ll remember how Bashful turned out to be the bravest of all, hanging out with the horses and Oni’s dog. Over time, they all realized what a wonderful retirement they were having. TomTom became a glutton for Temptation Treats, Forrest began to greet Oni at the door each morning and DimSum (who we learned was deaf) began to stretch out on the couch. We believe all of the cats were at least 15 years old, and in Tommy’s case, we suspect he was much older than that.
So it’s with a full heart that we let you know that over the past few months, one-by-one the kitties decided it was time to join their old pals over the Rainbow Bridge. Please know that these cats could not have lived such long lives if it weren’t for the TLC that our volunteers provided them over the years, and of course the love they received with Oni. Because Cat Angels don’t always have Wings sometimes they have Whiskers shirt. Although sad, we’re so thankful they didn’t pass away while living in the rocks on the trail and got to experience the pampered life of a domestic house cat, which after all is what they were.

All of these kitties are very special to us and we have beautiful memories of them out on the Bay Trail. But Tommy, The Sea Captain, had such a powerful presence as he sat on the rocks watching over the Bay, with his expressive eyes and independent spirit. Last week some of his admirers gathered outside the barn for a final tribute to such a noble Captain of the Sea. Oni could not have said it better, “Being The Captain, he was the last to go down with the ship once he knew all of his buddies were safe and waiting for him.” A poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson was read called “Crossing the Bar”. The Sea Captain was laid to rest with a bouquet of white roses and a packet of his favorite food. He went to his grave well loved.
