41 Dirk Nowitzki Thank you for the memories signature shirt. In 1998 I was an 8 year old second grader, but that was when one of my all time favorite players Dirk Nowitzki, would make his debut for my favorite team, the Dallas Mavericks. Thank you for everything that you have done, not only for this organization but the NBA as well. Now almost 21 years later you are playing your last game at American Airlines. 21 years of loyalty to the Mavericks organization. There will never be another one like you. You gave me my favorite sports moment in 2011 when you led the upset over the super team Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. Thank you for the memories 41.

I said at the beginning of the yr i wanted to go to the gm tonight but it wasn’t in the cards. Arguably one of the top 20 players of all time played his entire career for the Mavs and we were lucky to have seen it. Nothing but respect for every aspect of his game. I am old enough to have the cowboys dynasty in my childhood memories, but the 11’ Mavs run was definitely something special. 41 Dirk Nowitzki Thank you for the memories signature shirt. I remember when they traded the rights to Robert Traylor (who?) for some skinny awkward looking German kid that lit up a Nike camp. He didn’t look like much with his earrings and highlights but say flashes his rookie year. The rest is history. What a tough competitor. Legend
So bummed I couldn’t be there for his last home game in Dallas. But watching the ceremony back this morning, I can’t help but get emotional. Dirk was my first crush when I was 13 and I got to meet him that year! He then became a role model for my own game. I tried to mirror his moves on the court. My school didn’t have the number 41, so I picked 14 which was the closest I could get. I went on to play in college and 1 year semi-pro. Always having his game in my mind. In 2006, I got to cheer Dirk on in the NBA finals for the first time. I got to feel extreme joy and disappointment when we lost to the Heat that year. In the 2010-2011 season, I got to work for the Mavericks during home games. And in 2011, the Mavs won the NBA finals for the first time ever.
Thank you for the memories
I got to be at the finals games, be in the victory parade for the whole city of Dallas, and hold the trophy. It was the greatest year in sports history for me. But in life, 2011 was the worst year. I would often times leave a Mavs game and go visit my dad in the hospital to talk about the game or bring him a Tshirt. He died of cancer a couple months later, but not before he got to see his favorite team and player win it all for the first time in history. I know it’s a sport, but that year it was more than just a game. It was something bright and positive in the midst of darkness. For brief moments, we forgot all about the pain, and could celebrate together as a family.
