The Iowa Hawkeye football team held their annual Media day Friday. The upcoming season will be the 130th anniversary of Iowa Hawkeye football, and the 20th Season for head coach Kirk Ferentz, who will become the all-time wins leader in Hawkeye history. The Hawkeyes go into the season with alot of optimism following an 8-5. The season will begin with question marks, however. Four players are not eligible to play in the opener on September 1st as they will be serving one game suspensions for team rules violations. This season the Hawkeyes will have to replace pretty much all the outstanding linebackers from last season, who led the outstanding Hawkeye defense.

Coach Ferentz commented about that. “That’s an obvious area of need, much like after the 2013 season where we had three seniors graduate,” said Ferentz. “Same thing here, three guys plus Kevin Ward, who was a really valuable member of that group. We’re about where we were at the end of spring, Amani Jones and Nick Niemann really surfaced as being two guys that really looked like they were ahead of the pack, and I think after that it’s a wide-open completion. Safe to say Barrington Wade, we’ll keep him outside, but that doesn’t mean Niemann couldn’t move inside, and then there are a couple other guys that most likely won’t be outside, would play in one of those interior positions”

Jack Hockaday has shined in offseason workouts for the Hawkeyes at linebacker and saw some quality action last year. In the mix as well at linebacker will be Dimon Colbert and Christian Welch. In the secondary the Hawkeyes need to replace All-American Josh Jackson. However, the secondary certainly has good talent coming back. The defensive line will be led again this season by stalwart defensive ends Parker Hesse and Anthony Nelson. The defense line is always a strength of the Hawkeyes and this year should be no different. 130th anniversary of Iowa Hawkeyes signature shirt is available. Love it!
